Quick answer

Can I host my own VPN server on a rented server in Hong Kong?

Yes. You can host your own VPN server on a rented server in Hong Kong with WireGuard or OpenVPN: it needs root access, a public IP address and one open UDP port. Hong Kong law, read on 2 November 2026, still governs the datacenter. Copperstrait rents whole Hong Kong machines from $143.25 per 30 days, crypto, no KYC.

What do you need for a self-hosted VPN in Hong Kong?

Four things, all part of a dedicated server:

  • Root access, to install packages and change kernel settings;
  • a public IP address, so your devices can reach the server;
  • IP forwarding and a NAT rule, so tunnel traffic can leave through the server;
  • one open UDP port for the VPN.

A Copperstrait server comes with one dedicated IPv4 address and an IPv6 /64. You choose Debian, Ubuntu, AlmaLinux or Rocky Linux at checkout. Server details are on renting a dedicated server in Hong Kong.

WireGuard or OpenVPN: which should you run?

WireGuard for a personal or team VPN, OpenVPN when you need TCP or existing OpenVPN clients.

  • WireGuard carries IP packets over UDP. Its site lists the Noise framework, Curve25519, ChaCha20, Poly1305 and BLAKE2. Each peer's public key maps to the tunnel addresses it may use, which WireGuard calls cryptokey routing. Its quickstart says it stays silent when idle.
  • OpenVPN defaults to UDP port 1194, the number IANA assigned to it, and can run over TCP instead. It is the older of the two.

For one person or a small team, WireGuard needs a dozen lines of configuration; OpenVPN usually needs a certificate authority.

How do I set up WireGuard on a Hong Kong server?

Five steps on Debian or Ubuntu; the commands and files follow.

  1. Rent a server with root

    Pick a server in Hong Kong with Debian or Ubuntu, then log in as root over SSH.

  2. Install WireGuard and make keys

    Install the wireguard and iptables packages, then create the server key pair with wg genkey and wg pubkey.

  3. Write wg0.conf

    Give the tunnel a private address, UDP port 51820, the server private key, a NAT rule and one [Peer] block per device.

  4. Start the tunnel

    Run systemctl enable --now wg-quick@wg0 so it starts now and at every boot, and keep UDP port 51820 open.

  5. Add each device

    Give each device its own key pair, a /32 address, and the server public key and IP; wg show then lists a recent handshake.

WireGuard on the server, step 1: install it and make the keys (Debian or Ubuntu, as root)
apt install -y wireguard iptables
umask 077
wg genkey | tee /etc/wireguard/server.key | wg pubkey > /etc/wireguard/server.pub
Step 2: write /etc/wireguard/wg0.conf (replace eth0 with the interface shown by: ip route show default)
[Interface]
Address = 10.8.0.1/24
ListenPort = 51820
PrivateKey = <contents of /etc/wireguard/server.key>
PostUp = sysctl -w net.ipv4.ip_forward=1; iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -s 10.8.0.0/24 -o eth0 -j MASQUERADE
PostDown = iptables -t nat -D POSTROUTING -s 10.8.0.0/24 -o eth0 -j MASQUERADE

[Peer]
PublicKey = <public key of your laptop or phone>
AllowedIPs = 10.8.0.2/32
Step 3: start it now and at every boot
systemctl enable --now wg-quick@wg0
WireGuard on your device
[Interface]
PrivateKey = <private key of this device>
Address = 10.8.0.2/32
DNS = 1.1.1.1

[Peer]
PublicKey = <contents of /etc/wireguard/server.pub>
Endpoint = <server IPv4 address>:51820
AllowedIPs = 0.0.0.0/0
PersistentKeepalive = 25

How do you finish and check the setup?

Generate a key pair on each device with wg genkey and wg pubkey, as WireGuard's quickstart shows. Add one [Peer] block per device on the server, each with its own /32 address.

Then run wg show on the server. A peer with a recent handshake is connected. To carry IPv6 too, give both sides a private IPv6 range and add ::/0 to AllowedIPs.

Keep SSH reachable while you change firewall rules. No IPMI or KVM-over-IP console is given to customers; the team runs the reboots and reinstalls you request in the dashboard.

Who is a Hong Kong VPN close to?

Users in Hong Kong, Taiwan and the Philippines first. WonderNetwork's medians from Hong Kong, 19 October to 2 November 2026, are:

  • 14 ms to Taipei;
  • 19 ms to Manila;
  • 30 ms to Singapore;
  • 59 ms to Tokyo.

A VPN adds that round trip to everything you open through it. We publish no latency or speed figures of our own: we have not measured them. Test from where your users are once the server is yours. Other routes are on the latency between Singapore, Hong Kong and Tokyo.

What limits apply to traffic through the VPN?

The port and the allowance. Every server has a 1 Gbit/s port with a monthly traffic allowance (Strait 16 20 TB, Strait 32 20 TB, Strait 32F 30 TB), one dedicated IPv4 address and an IPv6 /64; going past the allowance never triggers an automatic bill. No China-optimised route (CN2) is sold.

Strait 16's 20 TB per 30 days averages about 62 Mbit/s over 30 days. That is a monthly volume, not a speed cap.

Outgoing port 25 is shut on every server, permanently, to keep spam out; ports 465 and 587 to mail providers work. A mail client on the VPN should use port 465 or 587 to its provider.

Which rules apply to a VPN server in Hong Kong?

Hong Kong law governs the datacenter and its network. Copperstrait is operated by DomaineGoat LLC, incorporated in Panama and answerable to Panamanian law only. The datacenter in each city is bound by the law of the place it stands in.

If other people use your VPN, any personal data you keep about them falls under Hong Kong's PDPO. Its principle 2(2) says personal data must not be kept longer than necessary. How Hong Kong's newer laws reach hosts is on is Hong Kong still a good place to host servers?

On Copperstrait's side, a VPN for yourself or your team is allowed. Prohibited: spam or bulk email, phishing, malware or botnet control, DDoS or other attacks, scanning or brute-forcing systems you do not own, booter or stresser services, carding or fraud, child sexual abuse material, cryptocurrency mining, IPTV or the public distribution of films, series, music, games or software you hold no rights to, and any service to sanctioned people or companies. The full rules are in the acceptable use policy. This page is not legal advice.

What does Copperstrait log about your server?

We keep no logs: no record of connections or traffic and no IP address of a visitor or customer, on the website, in the dashboard or on any server. The only records kept are those billing and running the server need.

In Copperstrait's survey of 33 hosts selling bare metal in Asia on 2 November 2026, 18 accept crypto, and only 6 say they ask for no ID at signup. No KYC: you upload no ID, no selfie and no documents, and give no card or phone number.

Plans are on how much a Copperstrait server costs.

Self-hosted VPN in Hong Kong: common questions

Which port does a WireGuard server use?

Any UDP port you choose with ListenPort. WireGuard's own examples use 51820. OpenVPN defaults to UDP 1194.

Do I need a dedicated server for a personal VPN?

Not necessarily. A whole machine makes sense when the VPN shares the server with other workloads, or when a team needs room to grow. Copperstrait rents dedicated servers only.

Can I run a VPN on a Copperstrait server without an SSH key?

Yes. Leave the key out at checkout and a temporary root password comes with the server; change it with passwd when you first log in.

Is a Hong Kong VPN server fast from Singapore or Tokyo?

WonderNetwork's medians are 30 ms from Hong Kong to Singapore and 59 ms to Tokyo. Users in those cities are closer to a server in their own city, at the same Copperstrait price.
