An honest answer from a host with no Indian location: when to rent in Mumbai or Chennai, and what Singapore offers Indian users, with public latency figures, cable maps and prices.

**Quick answer — What is the best server location for users in India?**

The best server location for users in India is in India: Mumbai, where most hosts sell, or Chennai, where cables to Singapore land. Outside India, Singapore is the closest hub: WonderNetwork's medians to 2 November 2026 were 31.8 ms from Chennai and 54.2 ms from Mumbai. **Copperstrait** has no Indian server; it rents Singapore servers from $143.25, crypto, no KYC.

## What are the key facts for serving India?

| Attribute | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Hosts selling bare metal in India | 10 of 33 checked on 2 November 2026 |
| Indian city with published prices | Mumbai at every host that published one; Vultr also in Bangalore and Delhi NCR |
| Chennai | No published bare-metal price found; OneProvider quotes on request |
| Round trip to Singapore (WonderNetwork) | Chennai 31.8 ms, Mumbai 54.2 ms, New Delhi 72.3 ms |
| Cables in service, India to Singapore (TeleGeography) | 5 from Chennai, 3 from Mumbai |
| Indian rule for local providers | CERT-In directions of 28 April 2022: validated customer names kept 5 years |
| Copperstrait in India | No location. Nearest: Singapore, $143.25/30 days |

## Should I host inside India or outside it?

Inside, if nearly all your users are Indian. The path is shorter and Indian servers are cheap. Microsoft's median between its Pune and Chennai regions is 20 ms.

Outside, if your users are split between India and Southeast Asia. Singapore then serves both. Microsoft's median from Singapore is 37 ms to Chennai, 53 ms to Pune, 16 ms to Jakarta and 8 ms to Kuala Lumpur.

**A host with no Indian location should tell you when India is the better choice. Here it often is.**

## Mumbai or Chennai: which Indian city?

Mumbai for choice; Chennai for the route east. In our survey, every host that published an Indian bare-metal price sold it in Mumbai. We found no published price in Chennai: OneProvider lists it as a custom-quote city, and Zenlayer names it as a zone without public prices.

The cables explain the split. TeleGeography lists 12 cables in service at Mumbai, many running west to the Gulf, Africa and Europe. Chennai has 7, and 5 of them reach Singapore. Microsoft runs regions in both cities, and in Pune.

To reach Southeast Asia from India, Chennai is the shorter start. To reach the Gulf or Europe, Mumbai is.

## What does a dedicated server in India cost?

The cheapest Indian plan of at least 4 cores and 16 GB at each host that published one. Sizes differ, so read the specs.

*Prices checked on November 2, 2026.*

Prices as listed on 2 November 2026; Zomro's setup fee is spread over 12 months in the dollar figure; 1 EUR = 1.1172 USD (ECB, 2026-10-30). The UK designated the company behind Cryptomus on 8 October 2026.

## What does Singapore offer Indian users?

The shortest path out of India to the east, and a hub that also serves Southeast Asia. WonderNetwork's median over two weeks to 2 November 2026 was 31.8 ms from Chennai to Singapore. It was 54.2 ms from Mumbai and 72.3 ms from New Delhi.

Physics sets the floor. Chennai is 2,902 km from Singapore along the great circle, so light in fibre needs at least 28.4 ms there and back. Mumbai, at 3,904 km, has a floor of 38.2 ms.

**Five cables in service link Chennai straight to Singapore.** TeleGeography lists i2i (2002), Tata TGN-Tata Indicom (2004), SeaMeWe-4 (2005), IAX (2024) and MIST (2024). SeaMeWe-6 (2027) and I-2SEA (2029) are planned.

## Why not Hong Kong or Tokyo for India?

They are farther in every measure. Microsoft's median from Hong Kong is 70 ms to Chennai and 88 ms to Pune. From Tokyo it is 105 and 122 ms. Singapore's figures are 37 and 53 ms.

The great-circle floor agrees. Mumbai is 4,297 km from Hong Kong and 6,720 km from Tokyo. Their fibre floors are 42.1 ms and 65.8 ms.

The matrix between the three hubs is on [the latency between Singapore, Hong Kong and Tokyo](https://copperstrait.com/asia-server-latency/ "Asian hub latency from dated public sources").

## Which Indian rules apply to providers in India?

India's computer emergency team, CERT-In, issued directions on 28 April 2022 under section 70B(6) of the Information Technology Act. They name data centres, VPS providers, cloud providers and VPN providers.

Those providers must record validated customer names, addresses and phone numbers, hire dates, IP addresses and the purpose of hire. They keep the records for 5 years or longer after the account ends. Service providers must also keep logs of their systems for 180 days, within Indian jurisdiction. The directions took effect 60 days after issue.

This is general information, not legal advice. Copperstrait is operated by DomaineGoat LLC, incorporated in Panama and answerable to Panamanian law only. The datacenter in each city is bound by the law of the place it stands in. No KYC: you upload no ID, no selfie and no documents, and give no card or phone number.

## How many hosts sell servers in India?

**In Copperstrait's survey of 33 hosts selling bare metal in Asia-Pacific on 2 November 2026, 10 sell in India, against 26 in Singapore.** Among those that take crypto, RedSwitches and Zomro use Cryptomus only. Ultahost states no included IPv4 address, and Vultr's bare metal starts at $350.00.

The cheapest servers in India are cheaper than Copperstrait's smallest one. If price is the main concern and your users are Indian, rent in Mumbai.

## What can Copperstrait offer for India?

A whole server in Singapore, one hop from Chennai and Mumbai by cable. Strait 16 costs $143.25/30 days: AMD EPYC 7302P (16 cores / 32 threads), 64 GB DDR4 ECC, 2 × 1.92 TB NVMe in RAID 1, 1 Gbit/s port with 20 TB of traffic per 30 days, 1 IPv4 and an IPv6 /64. Someone on the team sets the machine up once your payment is confirmed, within 72 hours, so delivery is not instant; the dashboard tracks it until the IP address shows.

It suits a service for India and Southeast Asia at once, or one that needs a no-KYC host.
